What If You Traveled Back in Time and Had to Be the First to Reach Australia? | How Did Your Ancestors Reach Australia | First Australians Sea Crossing
You traveled back in time 60,000 years. You are standing knee-deep in water in Southeast Asia, and your first raft just fell apart. All you have is bamboo and vine, and in front of you is open ocean.
How did your ancestors cross deep water to reach Australia with no maps, no compass, and no metal tools?
For a long time, scientists thought early humans could only walk. Then they found Madjedbebe in Northern Australia, a site dated to around 65,000 years ago. Someone had to cross the Wallace Line, a stretch of deep ocean trenches that never had land bridges, even during the Ice Age.
We're breaking down how it happened: from the first failed raft made with fresh bamboo and loose vine, to fire-cured bamboo and soaked rattan lashings, to the second failure when the raft spins in cross-currents, to the stabilizer spar idea that finally holds direction, to navigating by smoke plumes, bird flight lines, and ocean swells with no land in sight.
This was not a short trip. Days at sea, no fresh water, storms, and no way back, because wind and currents made it a one-way crossing into Sahul, the ancient continent of Australia and New Guinea.
And they did not just survive. The First Australians went on to build the oldest continuous living culture on Earth.
Drop your thoughts in the comments: would you have stepped on that raft knowing you might never come back?
