Why The Mafia Commission Hated John Gotti So Much
There is a photograph on the front page of the New York Daily News dated December 17, 1985. Paul Castellano lies on the sidewalk in front of Sparks Steak House on East 46th Street in Manhattan, six bullets, police tape, Christmas shoppers. America saw it as a Mafia hit. The man who ordered it, John Gotti, sat in a car a block away and then had it driven past the scene. A few weeks later he became boss of the largest crime family in New York. Four months later the Commission sent a car bomb to kill him. The bomb killed his underboss by mistake. Then came hit men from New Jersey. All of them failed. There was a rule unbroken for 28 years, a trial that sentenced every boss to 100 years in prison, and a boss who pretended to be crazy for 17 years to avoid the same fate.
