🌱 Lecture 7: Reclamation of Saline Soil Saline soils contain excessive amounts of soluble salts that can adversely affect seed germination, plant growth, soil-water relations, nutrient availability, and crop productivity. Effective reclamation aims to remove excess salts from the root zone and restore favourable conditions for sustainable crop production. In Lecture 7 of the “Problematic Soils and Their Management” series, we discuss the major principles, methods, and management practices used for the reclamation and productive management of saline soils. 🌱 In this lecture, you will learn: 🔹 What is saline soil and why does salinity develop? 🔹 Important considerations before reclamation 🔹 Leaching or flushing of soluble salts 🔹 Leaching Requirement (LR) and its importance 🔹 Role of adequate drainage in salt removal 🔹 Surface and subsurface drainage 🔹 Physical/mechanical methods of reclamation 🔹 Scraping of salt crust 🔹 Deep ploughing and sub-soiling 🔹 Sanding and profile inversion 🔹 Irrigation water management 🔹 Cultural and agronomic practices 🔹 Furrow sowing under saline conditions 🔹 Use of suitable fertilizers and organic manures 🔹 Mulching and reduction of evaporation 🔹 Selection of salt-tolerant crops 🔹 Biological approaches and special situations for chemical amendments 🔹 Integrated management for restoring saline soils to productive agriculture 💧 Key Principle of Saline Soil Reclamation Leaching moves soluble salts downward, while drainage removes salt-rich water from the soil profile. Successful reclamation therefore requires an integrated approach involving good-quality irrigation water, effective leaching, adequate drainage, proper soil management, and suitable crop selection. 🎓 Useful for B.Sc.
