Several automatic gearboxes featuring both back-end (prototype 1) and front-end (prototype 2) linear torque detection. An opposing spring-worm pair is used to detect resistance on the 8t driven gear. A sliding pulley wheel (with modified frictionless axle hole) functions as a custom transmission ring shifter. This requires less than one stud of linear motion, which most springs are able to achieve. Front-end torque detection allows faster output speeds, but fails to shift under sudden high load because output must turn while shifting. *the spring used is not an official Lego part; it is replaceable with a Lego shock absorber A related stepper mechanism:    • Lego Technic Stepper Mechanism (with Built...   A related shifting mechanism (Technic Brick Power):    • Lego 2 Speed Automatic gearbox -  worm gea...   Back-drive prevention mechanism (Technic Brick Power):    • Lego Technic smoothly switching 2 speed au...   Torque creation mechanism (Technic Brick Power):    • Lego Technic torque in practice - how to w...   0:00 Prototype 1.1 1:36 Prototype 1.2 1:56 Prototype 1.3 4:45 Concept Car 1.3 7:22 Prototype 2 Design 7:51 Prototype 2.1 8:37 Prototype 2.2 9:49 Prototype 2.3 12:59 Concept Car 2.3 15:27 Prototype 2.4 17:55 Prototype 2.5 18:21 Concept Car 2.5 20:02 Subscribe!
