Day 18 (June 17): We make it from our camping spot at Dome Lake to Sargents! Our ride is marked by spectacular mountain scenery, storms, wildlife and the aftermath of Fred's first crash - broken rear breaks and bruises.
We ride through Rio Grande and San Isabel National Forests into Summit Country and bag Marshall Pass (10,842 ft) crossing the Great Divide yet another time (we stopped counting :)) and going through remote towns like Sargents (“elevation high, population few” based on the welcome sign).
This section is marked by spectacular mountain scenery and wonderful wildlife: We see bighorn sheep, elk, marmots, hawks...Incredible!
We recover from a moment of shock the day before: Fred's rear brake suddenly didn't work (we find out this was due to a broken hydraulic cable) and Fred crashed on the downhill from Carnero Pass. His derailleur is now bend and body scratched, but nothing more severe. We keep having wonderful experiences of kind humans : A couple offers us water up Marshall pass!
