Predator 2 brought the iconic alien hunter from the jungle to the streets of Los Angeles, earning three Saturn Award nominations, including Best Science Fiction Film and Best Special Effects. But even after more than three decades, this movie is still hiding some secrets. Did you know an early screenplay revealed that City Hunter wasn't originally supposed to be killed by Harrigan, but met a far more shocking fate? Or that the filmmakers once planned to bring Dutch back in the sequel to team up with Harrigan against another Predator? Today, we're uncovering 13 hidden truths behind Predator 2 (1990), including hidden Easter eggs, an alternate ending, and how the sequel was almost set during World War Two.
Near the end of Predator 2, Mike Harrigan follows the wounded Predator, known as City Hunter, into its underground spaceship. After a final confrontation, Harrigan kills the creature using its own Smart Disc and suddenly, several other Predators appear around him. Their leader rewards Harrigan with an antique pistol and allows him to escape. But a December 1989 screenplay written by Jim and John Thomas reveals that City Hunter was originally supposed to die in a completely different way. In this version, Harrigan severely wounds City Hunter with the Smart Disc, leaving him on the verge of death, but still alive. The Predator leader, known as Greyback, then appears and approaches the wounded hunter. Seeing City Hunter on the verge of death, Greyback ends his life by decapitating him with his wrist blades. Jim and John Thomas later explained the execution as punishment for the hunter’s failure for failing to defeat his human prey. However, director Stephen Hopkins ultimately abandoned this version because he wanted the ending to focus more on Harrigan's victory and the Predators' respect for a worthy opponent. The official novelization, written by Simon Hawke in 1990, also features this ending, where Greyback decapitates City Hunter. So which ending do you prefer?
From the alternate ending that almost changed Harrigan's victory to the hidden stories behind the Predator's iconic design, Predator 2 still holds plenty of surprises more than three decades later.
