Softsteel - First Light on the Highway (Official Lyric Video)

[Verse 1] We turned the porch light off and left a note we didn't sign, And rolled the car down the drive so the gravel wouldn't whine. You packed the shoebox of letters we were too scared to send, You slid the ring you wore for show in the glovebox, let it end. [Pre-Chorus] This ain't runnin' away — it's the first time we chose. A full tank, an open road, and here's how it goes. [Chorus] The town in the mirror keeps shrinking to grey, Smaller than the lie we had to live every day. First light breaks on the highway, open and wide, And we drive straight into it with nothing left to hide. Watch it disappear. And we're gone. [Verse 2] I was "the roommate" when your sister came to stay, Two names on the mailbox, a spare bed made each day. You wouldn't hold my hand past the end of the yard, You'd say my name in that town like it might leave a scar. [Bridge] You didn't reach for my hand till the county line was gone, Then you cranked the radio and sang like you'd known it all along. At a Shell off the interstate, you kissed me under the lights, And nobody looked twice. And you held my hand all night. [Chorus] The town in the mirror keeps shrinking to grey, Smaller than the lie we had to live every day. First light breaks on the highway, open and wide, And we drive straight into it with nothing left to hide. Watch it disappear. And we're gone.
