World's Longest Pleasure Pier - SOUTHEND Pier & railway 2026

Southend Pier is the city’s most treasured, historical icon as well as being the longest pleasure pier in the world. It stretches for 1.33 miles out into the Thames Estuary, putting Southend on the map as well as into the record books. Southend Pier Railway is a 3 ft narrow gauge railway that runs for 1.25 miles along the length of Southend Pier, providing passenger transport from the shore to the Pier Head. Pier trains run on a half hourly basis. The trains travel at 8-10mph and when travelling through the points the speed drops to 5mph. The current trains went into service in 2021. Since 1879 the Lifeboat crews of Southend have saved over 2000 lives!​ Pop into the Gift Shop in the Pier Head boathouse, where you'll find a wide selection of toys, models, stationary, clothing and accessories, games, badges, books, postcards, key rings, kitchen ware and many other interesting things. The shop also has a public viewing gallery into the Pier Head boathouse where two of the four Southend lifeboats operate from.
