La Paz, officially known as Nuestra Señora de La Paz, is the de facto capital of Bolivia and is the seat of government of the Plurinational State of Bolivia. La Paz is characterized by its mountainous geography. Mount Illimani in the background dominates the city skyline. The cable car system in La Paz called 'Mi Teleferico' is very easy and organized so you can do it on your own. It works exactly like the subway in any other big city. Locals use cable cars as public transport but tourists can enjoy amazing views and get the feel of the whole city in just 3 hours. Tiwanaku (Spanish: Tiahuanaco or Tiahuanacu) is a Pre-Columbian archaeological site in western Bolivia, near Lake Titicaca, about 70 kilometers from La Paz, and it is one of the largest sites in South America. Pumapunku or Puma Punku ('Gate of the Puma') is at the Tiwanaku Site. When Was Puma Punku Built? Controversial Dates When an Austrian explorer named Arthur Posnansky performed a study on Puma Punku back in 1926 he put forward the idea that it’s one of the oldest archaeological sites on the face of Earth - dating back to at least 13,000 BC. The most intriguing thing about Puma Punku is the stonework. The red sandstone and andesite stones were cut in such a precise way that it’s as if they were cut using a diamond tool, and they can fit perfectly into and lock with each other. Uyuni primarily serves as a gateway for tourists visiting the world's largest salt flats, the nearby Uyuni salt flat. Train Cemetery for locomotives. And it’s so big that it looks as though all of the trains in South America were moved to Uyuni, Bolivia, to chug their last chug. It’s only about 3 km away from the Uyuni train station. Salar de Uyuni (or "Salar de Tunupa") is the world's largest salt flat, or playa, at over 10,000 square kilometres (3,900 sq mi) in area. It is in the Daniel Campos Province in Potosí in southwest Bolivia, near the crest of the Andes at an elevation of 3,656 m (11,995 ft) above sea level. Incahuasi has a total area of 24.62 hectares (61 acres) and hosts gigantic cacti (Trichocereus pasacana) and a tourist center. There are unusual and fragile coral-like structures and deposits that often consist of fossils and algae. The place is the top of the remains of an ancient volcano, which was submerged when the area was part of a giant prehistoric lake, roughly 40,000 years ago. Árbol de Piedra means “stone tree”, it’s an isolated rock formation in the heart of the Bolivian antiplano about 20km from Laguna Colorada. The strong whistling winds barrage the soft sandstone with small sand particles and erode the “stem” of the “tree” into this peculiar structure. Sol de Mañana is an area with geothermal manifestations in southern Bolivia, including fumaroles, hot springs and mud pools. It lies at about 4,900 metres (16,100 ft) elevation, south of Laguna Colorada and east of El Tatio geothermal field. The Polques Hot Springs have a high content of minerals which is said to relieve the symptoms of arthritis and rheumatism. The water temperatures hover at a comfortable 29°C. They are by no means boiling but offer a blissful contrast to the chilly weather outside the pool.
