What does it actually mean to be successful?
For much of his life, Dan measured success through achievement: goals, money, career, lifestyle, relationships and the milestones he believed would eventually produce happiness.
Then, shortly after turning 40, he looked at the goals he had planned to achieve by 50 and realized something unexpected: he had already accomplished most of them.
But the feeling he expected to arrive with them hadn't.
That realization became the beginning of a very different journey.
In Episode 7 of Conversations I Wish I Had With My Father, Carlos Vasquez and Dan Olschwang explore what success means when we move beyond accomplishment and begin asking a much more personal question:
What kind of life do I actually want to experience?
The conversation explores the difference between achieving a goal and creating a successful life, why fulfillment is deeply individual, and why someone can achieve extraordinary things without experiencing the happiness they expected those achievements to create.
Dan shares his view that success is less about arriving at a destination and more about creating a life you genuinely want to experience while you are living it.
Carlos and Dan explore:
• Why achieving goals and succeeding in life are not necessarily the same thing
• Why happiness continually postponed into the future can remain out of reach
• How family, culture and environment influence our definition of success
• Why fulfillment means something different for every person
• The relationship between success, growth and expanding your potential
• Why the people around you can either support or restrict your growth
• What makes a relationship — including a marriage — genuinely successful
• Why honest feedback is essential for continued evolution
• The importance of staying curious and continuing to learn
• What it means to enter a state of flow
• Whether anything is truly possible
• The difference between being pushed toward something and feeling pulled toward it
• Why your definition of success must ultimately come from within
The conversation eventually arrives at an even deeper question:
Who is it inside you that wants to be successful?
Is the life you're pursuing an expression of who you truly are?
Or are you pursuing a definition of success that was handed to you by your family, your environment, your culture or the expectations you absorbed along the way?
Because the answer changes everything.
Success may not be something you eventually arrive at.
It may be something you learn to live — through fulfillment, growth, relationships, curiosity, harmony, challenge and an increasingly authentic expression of who you are.
Perhaps the real question isn't:
“How do I become successful?”
Perhaps it's:
“What would a successful life actually feel like to me?”
