Mohammad Asif says he would join the PCB tomorrow, if anyone in Pakistan cricket ever picked up the phone and asked him. The legendary fast bowler is back on The Nakash Khan Show for a second, much harder conversation about where Pakistan cricket actually went wrong.
Pakistan sit eighth in the World Test Championship, have been whitewashed by Bangladesh, and are sending a squad of untried youngsters to the Asian Games without Babar Azam or Shaheen Afridi. Mohammad Asif watched all of it happen to a system he came through with no money, no cricketing family and no parchi. In this interview he explains exactly what broke: the domestic cricket that went from 25,000 players to 150, the two month fast bowling camps that no longer exist, and the three format player categories he calls the PCB's worst decision.
Then he opens the notebook. Asif breaks down the wobble seam that Jimmy Anderson studied, the ulta swing that only works in England and New Zealand, the difference between swing and seam, seam position, wrist position, and why bowling wide of the crease costs the batsman nothing. He explains what actually changed inside Shaheen Afridi, where Haris Rauf is losing matches, and why the new ball not swinging ends a Pakistani fast bowler's career. He talks Jasprit Bumrah's late release and back load, Mitchell Starc's fitness, how he would bowl at Babar Azam, and settles the Babar Azam vs Virat Kohli argument in one line. He warns that Pakistan could start losing Test matches to Zimbabwe, describes captaining Pakistan as sitting on a lion, and tells young fast bowlers the one thing that decides whether their skill ever arrives.
