Height of Instrument (HI) Method is a surveying technique used to determine elevations of various points relative to a known benchmark. It is commonly applied in leveling surveys to measure height differences across a site.
Procedure:
1.Setup the Instrument: A leveling instrument (such as an automatic or dumpy level) is placed on a tripod and leveled at a convenient location.
2. Backsight (BS) Reading: The first reading is taken on a known benchmark (BM), which has a given elevation.
3. Calculate Height of Instrument (HI): The HI is determined using the formula:
HI = \text{Elevation of BM} + \text{Backsight (BS)}
4. Foresight (FS) Readings: The instrument operator takes readings on various points where elevation needs to be determined.
5. Calculate Elevation of New Points: Using the formula:
text{Elevation of Point} = HI - \text{Foresight (FS)}
6. Repeat for Multiple Setups: If the survey area is large, the instrument is moved to a new location, and the process is repeated using an intermediate sight (IS) to transfer elevation.
Advantages:

Suitable for construction and topographical surveys.
Limitations:
