Alex Eala faces Chinese wildcard Shi Han in the first round of the 2026 Wuhan Open on Monday night. Shi is ranked 231st in the world and just knocked out America's Peyton Stearns to get here. Two players, both 21 years old, 213 ranking spots apart. One is the first Filipino in WTA top 20 history. The other needed a wildcard just to enter qualifying, and then came back from a set down to beat the 36th ranked player in the world. Alex Eala has never won a main draw match in Wuhan. She lost in the first round in 2024, and failed to qualify in 2025. This is attempt number three, and this time she arrives as the 13th seed with no first round bye. In this video: who Shi Han actually is, why this is the worst possible opening match for Eala right now, what she told Maria Sharapova four days ago that explains her whole game, and the scheduling detail nobody noticed about Monday night.
