We went to Gorakhgad Fort, one of the most dramatic trekking experiences in Maharastra.
At first, the trail feels almost too easy. Green forests, quiet trails and the Sahyadris opening up around you.
And then the mountain changes.
The simple trail turns into ancient rock-cut steps, narrow passages and a steep climb toward the top of the fort. With every step, the exposure gets real. And once you reach the final section, you understand why Gorakhgad is known for its thrilling climb.
This is the full story of our Gorakhgad Fort trek: the climb, the caves, the views, the moments that made us question our decisions, and the summit that made every step worth it.
If you’ve already seen the reels, here’s the full vlog, the route, how to reach Gorakhgad, what the climb is actually like, and everything we learned along the way.

Sturdy trekking shoes with good grip
Enough water
Snacks / energy food
Rain jacket or poncho during monsoon
Basic first-aid kit
A small backpack

SAFETY NOTE :
Gorakhgad isn't an extreme trek from start to finish, but the upper section deserves respect.
The rock-cut steps are steep and the descent can be particularly slippery. Move slowly, use the carved footholds properly and avoid attempting the climb in unsafe weather conditions.
This video documents our experience. It isn't an instruction to take unnecessary risks or attempt sections beyond your experience level.
A LITTLE ABOUT GORAKHGAD :
Gorakhgad is a historic hill fort in the Sahyadris near Murbad. The fort is associated with the Nath tradition and is named after the saint Gorakhnath, who is traditionally believed to have performed penance here.
The fort also has caves, rock-cut water cisterns, inscriptions and a temple near the top. Together with nearby Machindragad and the surrounding mountain routes, Gorakhgad holds an important place in the trekking landscape of the region.
