Congratulations! You are pregnant and anxious to hear fetal heart sounds. Usually fetal heart sounds appear at 5.5 weeks of pregnancy if the lady has regular periods. However if periods are infrequent then ovulation, implantation and embryo development all are delayed and so are the fetal heart sounds to the extent of 8 weeks of pregnancy. Hence total span of duration of appearance of fetal heart sounds may be between between 5.5 weeks to 8 weeks. If on first ultrasound fetal heart sounds are not detected don’t get disheartened. On repeat ultrasound after 8-10 days they usually appear. Normal Fetal heart rate is between 110-160 beats / minute . But in early pregnancy it may be as low as 100 beats/ minute .
