23 July 1983. A brand-new Boeing 767 with 69 people on board loses both engines over Canada. Not a leak, not a bomb: one small calculation made on the ground hours earlier. Can you spot the mistake before the pilots do? 0:00 Cold open 0:32 Montreal: the math 1:11 41,000 feet 1:58 Both engines 2:31 Winnipeg or Gimli 3:08 The landing 3:40 What went wrong A short film inspired by the true story of Air Canada Flight 143, the "Gimli Glider". With the fuel gauges out of service, the fuel was measured by hand, and the litres were converted with 1.77, the factor for pounds, on the airline's first jet to measure fuel in kilograms. It left with less than half the fuel it needed. After both engines stopped, the crew glided for about 17 minutes and landed on a disused runway at Gimli, Manitoba, which had become a racetrack. All 69 people on board survived. The dialogue is dramatised and is not taken from recordings (the cockpit voice recorder stopped when the power failed). Figures are rounded and simplified, the livery is generic, and the people are not likenesses. This film is not affiliated with or endorsed by Air Canada. Did you spot the mistake before they did?
