What I Left Behind This song came from me wondering what it might feel like to reach the end of a long life and finally look back at everything differently. My dad is 80 now, and our relationship has been complicated. There have been arguments, distance, blame and things said that can’t really be unsaid. After losing my brother, some of that became even harder. I started wondering what his life might look like from his point of view if, one day, all the arguments stopped mattering. What would be left when there was nobody left to convince, nobody to blame and no argument left to win? That idea became What I Left Behind, a song about pride, grief, family, blame, regret and the possibility of finally putting your armour down. Written and conceived by Oliver Tanton Brown Created with AI-assisted music production using Suno Lyrics Lyrics: What I Left Behind [Verse 1] Eighty years in photographs Faces fading into grey I remember every argument But not the things I should have said I spent a lifetime keeping score Every slight and every wrong Funny how the things that mattered then Don’t matter when they’re gone [Pre-Chorus] I thought love meant standing firm I thought strength meant never bending I could always find somebody else To blame for every ending [Chorus] So this is what I left behind A house of words I can’t take back Doors I closed, a son I lost And another one I pushed away I won a thousand little wars And somehow lost the people in them If I could live it all again Would I still need to win? [Verse 2] There was a boy I couldn’t reach I told myself somebody could Someone should have seen the signs Someone else should have understood And when the worst day finally came I needed somewhere for the pain So I handed out the pieces of my grief And gave everybody blame [Pre-Chorus] Maybe anger kept me standing Maybe pride just kept me blind Maybe I was asking other people To carry what was mine [Chorus] So this is what I left behind A house of words I can’t take back Doors I closed, a son I lost And another one I pushed away I won a thousand little wars And somehow lost the people in them If I could live it all again Would I still need to win? [Bridge] And now the room is getting quiet There aren’t many voices left No jury here to prove me right No argument to win Just names I haven’t spoken And years I can’t repair People I thought would always wait Until I noticed they weren’t there Maybe I loved them badly Maybe love was there somewhere Buried underneath the pride And everything I couldn’t share [Breakdown] If my sons remember anything When someone says my name Will they remember who I was Or how I made them feel? Will they say I kept the family strong? Will they say I tore it through? Maybe both of those are true Maybe that’s the hardest truth [Final Chorus] This is what I leave behind Not the story in my head But every word they carried home And everything I never said I won a thousand little wars But there was nothing left to win And if I had one day again I’d put my armour down I’d let them in [Outro] Eighty years in photographs Faces fading into grey I spent my whole life looking forward Now there’s only yesterday
