After the death of Saul (from 1 Samuel 31), David is still in Ziklag when the report of Saul’s death reaches him. A messenger (an Amalekite) arrives claiming he witnessed Saul’s death. He says Saul was wounded and asked him to kill him to avoid capture. The man brings Saul’s crown and armlet as proof. David and his men mourn deeply—tearing their clothes, weeping, and fasting. David questions the man and then orders his execution for claiming to have killed “the Lord’s anointed” (Saul). David composes a funeral song mourning Saul and his son Jonathan: He grieves Israel’s loss: “How the mighty have fallen!” He urges that the news not be celebrated by Israel’s enemies (Philistines). Saul is honored as a strong and successful warrior. David expresses deep personal sorrow for Jonathan, highlighting their close friendship. The poem ends with repeated lament over the fallen heroes of Israel.
