Dee Productions: Healing Through Harmony, Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future
In the lush rainforests and highland edges of East New Britain Province in Papua New Guinea, cockatoos and parrots reign as masters of the canopy. These vibrant birds—white sulphur-crested cockatoos with their dramatic yellow crests, the endemic blue-eyed cockatoos of New Britain, and a dazzling array of colourful parrots and lories—live high above the ground in the towering trees. From those lofty perches they scan the world below with sharp eyes and quick minds.
They are notoriously evasive. When gardens and food gardens on the forest edge offer ripe fruits, nuts, or crops, the birds descend in noisy flocks to feed, raiding the plantings with bold efficiency. Yet the moment danger appears they explode upward in a flurry of wings and harsh calls, vanishing into the dense upper foliage where few predators can follow. Their intelligence, acute hearing, and ability to move silently through the branches make them exceptionally difficult quarry. Traditional hunters with bows, spears, or even modern weapons often return empty-handed; the birds simply melt into the green heights and are gone.
Against this challenge the people of Toma have developed specialised traps refined over generations. These ingenious devices, set with patience and intimate knowledge of the birds’ flight paths, feeding trees, and daily routines, succeed where open pursuit fails. The men who climb into the canopy, set the traps, and retrieve the captured birds perform extraordinary feats of skill, balance, and courage high above the forest floor. It is dangerous work that demands steady nerves and deep understanding of both the trees and the wary birds.
This trapping forms an important part of local livelihood. The captured cockatoos and parrots are taken to markets, where they are sold—providing income for families in Toma. In a region where the forest still shapes daily life, the ability to outwit these elusive high-living raiders remains a mark of the bravery and resourcefulness of the Toma men who continue the practice.
