Medieval sleep music for one night in the woods. A consort of seven instruments at the start; six of them stop, one at a time, and none of them come back. Nothing is added in their place — the ones still playing carry the same melody while the room around it empties. At the end the hurdy-gurdy is on its own: the wheel turning, the trompette string buzzing against the drone, the melody string tracing the same slow line it traced at the beginning.
The drone on D and A never stops. It runs unbroken from the first second to the last, which is why this plays as one object rather than fourteen pieces. Nothing speeds up, nothing modulates, and there is no leading tone, so no phrase ever resolves and closes.
Hurdy-gurdy, vielle, gittern, alto recorder, psaltery, portative organ and tabor, close mic'd in a small stone room. No rain, no birdsong, no synthetic ambience — the forest is the room, not a sound effect.
For sleep, reading and long quiet work.
