READ THIS: You are watching Wallingford Live Skittles, the premier (only?) live broadcaster of traditional 9-Pin Pub Skittles in the UK. It's not Ten-Pin: We play on a wooden alley with 9 skittles or pins (not 10) in a diamond formation. Every gap is begin enough to let a ball clear through. The Ball: We throw wooden balls turned from Lignum Vitae weighing about 2lb 10oz or 1.2kg. Other leagues might use composite or rubber balls to knock the skittles down. Our skittles are solid beech, turned in the "gloucester" style. Everything is hand-turned, so each ball and skittle is very slightly different and they wear differently over time. The Rules: You get 3 bowls to score (called a leg, or hand). If you clear all 9 skittles before you've had all 3, the skittles are reset and you keep going. Maximum theoretical score for an individual per leg - 27. In this league, leg 3 is known as the "beer leg". It's a simple concept: score more than your opposite number and they have to take the walk of shame to the bar and buy you a drink. If they score more than you, get your wallet out and take the walk of shame yourself. If it's a draw, it rolls over to the next leg. If it's still undecided after the 5th and final leg, then you'll have to take yourselves out to the car park and settle it out there! The Vibe: This is "Slow TV" at its finest.
