Old school gospel blues about watching someone pray with a certainty you don't have. A deep bass-baritone lead, worn upright piano, warm Hammond organ and a low male quartet, in a slow 6/8 sway. The doctor folded up the paper. He put it in the kitchen drawer, under the twine and the receipts, and she never asked him what it said — she just turned the lamp back on. Every night around eleven he hears the floorboards by the bed. Same two knees, same worn-out place. He lies there with his eyes wide open, listening to her carry on. She prays like it's already done. He doesn't know how she does it. Lord. [Verse 1] Doctor folded up the paper Said he'd call me in a week I put it in the kitchen drawer Under the twine and the receipts She never asked me what it said She just turned the lamp back on [Verse 2] Every night around eleven I hear the floorboards by the bed Same two knees, same worn-out place Same quiet words above my head I lay there with my eyes wide open Listening to her carry on [Chorus] She prays like it's already done Like the morning's already come Like the Lord already signed His name On a thing I can't see yet I got questions in my chest She's got nothing but a rest I don't know how she does it She prays like it's already done [Verse 3] Three brown bottles on the table Lined up like they're standing guard She moves them when she sets my coffee Like they ain't allowed that far She don't argue with the morning She just meets it where it is [Bridge] What do you know that I don't know? He's been faithful all along What if the answer's no? Then He'll carry you along Lord, I ain't got her kind of faith But I'll borrow hers tonight [Verse 4] So last night I got down beside her Knees ain't what they used to be Didn't have no words to offer Just put my hand on hers and breathed And somewhere in the middle of her asking I stopped being afraid [Final Chorus] She prays like it's already done Like the morning's already come Like the Lord already signed His name On a thing I can't see yet I still got questions in my chest But tonight I got her rest And I finally understand it She prays like it's already done [Outro] Paper's still in the drawer. Lamp's still on. Original song and artwork by Pewlight — Vintage Gospel. #gospelblues #oldschoolgospel #prayerforhealing
