LPU Protests: How Did One Rumour Trigger Campus Violence? Decode With Sudhir Chaudhary : A rumour at Lovely Professional University in Punjab turned into a violent protest that continued for nearly 24 hours. Unverified claims about the alleged rape of a hostel student and later rumours of suicide led thousands of students to gather on campus, followed by vandalism, arson and protests on the Delhi-Amritsar National Highway. Clashes between students and police reportedly led to stone-pelting and a police lathi-charge, with several police personnel injured. LPU has claimed that the violence caused losses of around ₹30 crore and that outsiders were involved, while an FIR has been registered against an unidentified person over the rape complaint and an SIT has been formed to investigate it. The University has denied the rape and suicide rumours, while a similar protest had also taken place at Chitkara University following unverified claims.
