TATIANA NIKOLAYEVA plays "4 Duets from Clavier-Übung III" by JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH. Essentially significantly more mature sequels to the Two-Part Inventions BWV772-786, the 4 Duets are contrapunctal studies completed in 1739 and were included in Bach's published collection of works called "Clavier-Übung III". Except for No. 3, they are all two-part fugues like fugue No. 10 from the Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1 or the Fughetta C Minor BWV961, although longer in duration.
The first duet, which is also a double fugue, immediately reminds one of the A Minor prelude from the WTC Book 2 and perhaps even the E Major Invention with its numerable chromatic passages. The following duet is divided in two contrasting sections, the first of which gets repeated because of the Da Capo form. No. 3 sounds like a lost variation from the Goldbergs BWV988 similar to the Canon-Variation No. 27 and is the least harmonically or stylistically complex of the four. The final duet could almost be considered a sneak peek into the Art of Fugue BWV1080 due to the unpredictable voice-leading, further emphasized by its similar use of typical "Bachian" chromaticism.
