Conquering Chaos and Mayhem - season 2 episode 2 - Former FIMA Director Craig Fugate

What does effective emergency management really look like when disaster strikes? In this episode of Conquering Chaos & Mayhem, host Darryl Culley sits down with Craig Fugate, former administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), for a candid conversation about disaster preparedness, risk communication, leadership and the importance of putting communities first. Drawing on his extensive experience in emergency management, Fugate challenges some of the industry's long-standing assumptions. He discusses why the public should be viewed as a resource rather than a problem, why helping your neighbours can be the fastest response when disaster strikes, and why emergency managers must be willing to question established practices rather than simply accepting that things have always been done a certain way. The conversation also explores the importance of honest communication, preparing for events outside your comfort zone, building trust with elected officials before a disaster occurs, and focusing on outcomes rather than getting lost in processes and paperwork. From empowering disaster survivors to recognizing the value of spontaneous community responders, Fugate offers practical insights for emergency managers, first responders, public safety professionals and anyone interested in building more resilient communities. In this episode: The public as a resource in disaster response Effective risk communication and managing expectations Questioning assumptions and challenging the status quo Community preparedness and the importance of neighbours helping neighbours Learning from disasters and preparing for the unexpected Leadership, trust and focusing on outcomes Empowering survivors and making use of community capabilities Conquering Chaos & Mayhem brings real conversations to the forefront to help strengthen communities and improve emergency management.
