A deadly ambush in South Kivu has exposed the expanding role of foreign private-security contractors in the war in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. According to an exclusive Reuters investigation published on 9 October 2026, a Vectus Global team linked to Blackwater founder Erik Prince was ambushed on 17 September while travelling between locations in South Kivu. Sources said the attack left at least 20 people dead or wounded—not 20 confirmed deaths. Those reported killed included at least seven Congolese nationals and Justin Conaglen, a former member of New Zealand’s Special Forces. Former UFC fighter and US Army Green Beret Tim Kennedy reportedly survived after being shot three times in the leg. He was later evacuated to the United States and treated at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center near Washington. Another foreign Vectus Global contractor was also reportedly wounded. Sources cited by Reuters alleged that the attackers may have tracked a surveillance drone back to the team’s location before launching the surprise assault. Some sources accused Rwandan forces of involvement, while other reports attributed the operation to AFC/M23. However, no independent investigation has publicly established who carried out the ambush. Rwanda, the Congolese government and AFC/M23 did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. This original Rwanda Updates Media investigation reconstructs the incident, explains who Tim Kennedy and Justin Conaglen are, and examines how Erik Prince’s role in Congo reportedly expanded from securing mining revenues to supporting security operations near active battlefields. The report also explores how drones, electronic surveillance and private military expertise are reshaping the conflict in eastern DRC. ⚠️ *JOURNALISM DISCLAIMER* Rwanda Updates Media is committed to factual, balanced and responsible reporting.
