This video features Ñāṇavudha Sayādaw providing foundational instructions for a 10-day intensive Vipassana (insight) meditation retreat. The guide covers the core techniques for sitting meditation, walking meditation, and mindfulness in daily activities.
Sitting Meditation (2:01 - 23:05)
Posture: Sit in a comfortable, sustainable position (legs crossed next to each other is preferred over stacking), keeping the upper body straight without being stiff.
Technique: Direct attention to the abdomen. Label the movement of the abdomen as "rising" and "falling" (mentally, not verbally), observing the entire process from beginning to end.
Managing Distractions: If thoughts, emotions, or physical sensations arise, label them (e.g., "thinking," "pain," "hearing") without judgment or analysis, then return focus to the rising and falling of the abdomen.
Walking Meditation (23:05 - 40:54)
Methodology: Practice on a designated path (10–60 ft) with hands held together, eyes cast down 3–6 feet ahead.
Three Stages:
Basic: Focus on the movement of the feet, noting "right step" and "left step."
Intermediate: Divide each step into "lifting" and "dropping."
Advanced: Divide each step into "lifting," "moving," and "dropping."
Consistency: Always note intentions like "wanting to turn" and "wanting to walk" before executing the movements.
Mindfulness in Daily Activities (40:57 - 46:39)
Apply three key principles: perform actions slowly, focus on the active bodily part, and label the action mentally (e.g., "scooping," "chewing," "swallowing").
Rules and Regulations (46:40 - 52:54)
Maintain mindfulness in every action to avoid disturbing others.
Restrain eyes from looking around.
Observe silence and follow the designated schedule strictly to foster concentration and wisdom.
