Four questions to pick your first flock, three starter breeds (Golden Comet, Barred Rock, and Americana), and how an assortment lets you try several at once. Choosing breeds is where most new Keepers get stuck. We share the four questions that narrow the catalog: how many eggs you want, your climate, who's caring for the birds, and what you want to see in your yard. Then three starter breeds: the Golden Comet, a calm, friendly layer of brown eggs; the Barred Rock, docile and good with families; and the Americana, for blue and green eggs. You'll also learn how assortments work, why to start with 5 to 10 birds and never fewer than 3, and where to compare every breed side by side.
