Grizzly Bear Out of Hibernation in December! | Yellowstone Wildlife

A grizzly bear feeding on a carcass in Yellowstone National Park on December 30, 2019—and then a gray wolf shows up for a quick bite! This short but memorable encounter captures a fascinating interaction between two of Yellowstone's most iconic predators. As the grizzly feeds, a gray wolf briefly approaches and manages to grab a little of the carcass before moving away. What makes this sighting especially remarkable is the timing. The grizzly was observed feeding on the carcass on December 30, 2019, when bears are typically in their winter denning period. Based on our observation, the bear appeared to have emerged from hibernation to feed. Wildlife doesn't always follow the patterns we expect, and this encounter was a powerful reminder of how unpredictable life in Yellowstone can be. *Yellowstone Country Live (YCL)* brings you authentic wildlife encounters from Yellowstone National Park and the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
