Johnny Harris SHOCKED by CHINA'S Rapid Development

Why can China build massive infrastructure, high speed rail, entire urban districts and public projects at a speed that leaves many Western visitors stunned? And is the answer really as simple as: “because China is authoritarian”? In this video, we react at Johnny Harris’ attempt to understand the system behind modern China from the Communist Party and Deng Xiaoping’s reforms to technocratic governance, local government incentives and one of the largest reductions in extreme poverty in modern history. One of the most important points in Johnny's video is also one of the most revealing: authoritarianism alone does not explain China’s development. There are plenty of authoritarian countries that never produced anything comparable. My argument is that China’s rise makes far more sense when you look at what officials were actually rewarded for: economic development, infrastructure, competence and measurable results. My biggest disagreement comes is that western analysis often assumes elections are the only meaningful form of accountability. But China uses different mechanisms performance evaluation, public feedback, internal promotion systems and the removal of officials who fail to deliver. You don’t have to copy China’s political system to ask the obvious question: Why can China still build things that many Western countries increasingly seem incapable of building?
