Waking up to pee at night after 60? Before you automatically blame your bladder, take a look at your ankles.
For some people, evening ankle swelling and fluid that collects in the lower legs during the day may contribute to increased nighttime urine production after lying down. This is one possible contributor to nocturia — the medical term for waking during your main sleep period to urinate.
In this MORROWVIVE video, we explain the overlooked connection between your legs, circulation, kidneys, and nighttime bathroom trips.
You’ll learn why sock marks, tighter shoes, or puffier ankles in the evening may be useful clues; what happens to lower-leg fluid when you lie down; what nocturnal polyuria means; how gentle ankle movement activates the calf-muscle pump; and why a real circulation mechanism does NOT automatically mean a three-minute exercise can cure nighttime urination.
We also explain:
• Why nighttime urination is not always just a bladder problem
• How fluid may collect in the lower legs during the day
• Why lying down can change where that fluid goes
• How the kidneys may process redistributed fluid during the night
• Why large nighttime urine volumes can mean something different from frequent small voids
• What gentle ankle pumps actually do
• What the research does — and does not — prove
• When late-afternoon or evening leg elevation may be considered
• What research on compression stockings has found
• How a simple three-day bladder diary can reveal useful patterns
• Why aggressive dehydration is not the answer
• Why medications should never be stopped or retimed without professional guidance
• Which symptoms mean swelling or nighttime urination should be medically evaluated

The key idea is simple:
The bathroom may be where you notice the problem, but in some people, one useful clue may have been sitting in the lower legs hours earlier.
IMPORTANT:
Swollen ankles do not automatically mean leg-fluid redistribution is causing your nocturia. Nighttime urination can have many possible contributors, including bladder problems, enlarged prostate, sleep apnea, blood sugar problems, medications, kidney disease, heart conditions, and other causes.
