George Gurdjieff: His Life and Teaching | Documentary with Rare Archival Footage

Who was George Gurdjieff, and why does his teaching continue to attract people throughout the world? This full historical documentary explores the life, search and ideas of George Ivanovich Gurdjieff (1867–1949), the Greek-Armenian philosopher, spiritual teacher and composer associated with the Fourth Way. Made by Jean-Claude Lubtchansky, a close associate of Madame de Salzmann, with the support of the Gurdjieff Institute in France, the film combines rare archival footage of Gurdjieff and the Gurdjieff Movements with music composed by Gurdjieff and Thomas de Hartmann. It sets out the basis of Gurdjieff’s teaching in his own words. His father, Ivan, was Greek and his mother, Yeva, was Armenian. From an early age, Gurdjieff set out in search of knowledge that he believed had once been known to humanity but had subsequently been forgotten. His travels took him to Tibet, India, Egypt and monasteries in Asia. Gurdjieff taught that human beings are not ordinarily conscious of themselves but live in a state of “waking sleep,” caught in habits, worries and daydreams. He maintained that through conscious work and self-remembering, it is possible to awaken from this habitual condition. An account of Gurdjieff’s teaching is given in In Search of the Miraculous, written by his pupil P. D. Ouspensky. Gurdjieff himself wrote three books: Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson; Meetings with Remarkable Men; and Life Is Only Real, Then, When “I Am”. Gurdjieff died in Paris on 29 October 1949.
