The westerly wind that holds the polar vortex together has fallen to almost zero at 60°N, weeks before it has ever done so, and the Met Office says a sudden stratospheric warming is developing. The European model now shows 96% of its ensemble reversing the winds and the American model 71%, with the vortex pulled into two cores over Siberia and North America. Germany's gas storage stands at 60.8%, the lowest for the date in ten years. What nobody can yet say is where the cold goes when the effects reach the ground over the next two to six weeks.
