Most people picture wheat when they think of Manitoba, but the province also touches Hudson Bay, a salt-water sea, and its northern railway ends at an Arctic port. This video asks how a prairie province ends up with a working coast, and what a frozen-looking lakebed photographed from the International Space Station has to do with that railway.
The video counts down 25 facts from the prairie to the Arctic sea, moving from the vanished glacial Lake Agassiz to the Hudson Bay Railway, the Port of Churchill, and the public money and plans attached to them. Along the way it covers the 18th-century Prince of Wales Fort, the explorers who wintered and walked along this shore, and the wildlife that gathers at the bay. Every figure is labeled as measured, announced or still unproven, and the zinc shipment, the port expansion and the icebreaking study are kept apart so none is mistaken for a finished project. The thread that links the lakebed, the railway and the port is saved for the last numbers.
