Tonight, before you fall asleep, we are going to spend some time with the one star you have seen every day of your life and never once looked at. It is not burning. Nothing in it is on fire. And the core that lights the whole solar system puts out, per cubic metre, about as much heat as a compost heap. Nothing to stay awake for.
A slow, calm 54-minute journey in 4K for sleep, rest, or quiet focus, going all the way down into the Sun and then all the way back out: the scale of it, 1.39 million kilometres across (about 864,000 miles) and 333,000 times the mass of Earth, holding 99.8 percent of everything in this solar system; how it formed 4.57 billion years ago out of a cold cloud that something - probably a dying star - leaned on; the core at 15 million kelvin (27 million Fahrenheit), 13 times denser than lead and still a gas, where 600 million tonnes of hydrogen become 596 million tonnes of helium every second and the missing 4 million tonnes leaves as sunlight; why the first step of that reaction is almost impossible, and why an average proton waits about nine billion years for its turn; the random walk, where a photon made in the core takes tens of thousands of years to stagger out through plasma it can only cross a centimetre at a time; the convection zone, two million cells the width of France, each one rebuilt every quarter of an hour; the photosphere, which is not a surface at all but simply the depth at which light finally escapes; sunspots, which are not holes and not cool - 3,800 kelvin, bright enough to outshine a full Moon if you cut one out; the 11-year cycle that is really 22, and the 70 years in the 1600s when it nearly stopped; the corona, between one and three million kelvin for reasons nobody has been able to add up since 1942; flares, coronal mass ejections, the Carrington event of 1859 and the aurora; the solar wind leaking a million and a half tonnes a second out to the heliopause that Voyager crossed in 2012; and the far end of it - a red giant, then a planetary nebula, then an ember the size of Earth that the universe is still too young to have watched go cold. The narration slows down as the chapters go on, and the final chapter drifts out so you do not have to.

How to use: play at a low volume, screen off if you like. Nothing in this video is designed to wake you.
A note on certainty: the Sun is the best-observed star there is, but parts of this are still open. The photon escape time from the radiative zone is model-dependent and published figures range from about 10,000 to 170,000 years. Coronal heating is unsolved. Whether the Maunder Minimum caused the cold European winters that overlap it is unsettled, and that period also had heavy volcanic activity. Whether Earth survives the red giant phase is genuinely uncertain, because the Sun will be shedding mass as it expands and the two effects nearly cancel. Where a number is disputed, the narration says so.

Every photograph carries its credit and title in the corner. Artist concepts are illustrations, not photographs. Some frames are AI-generated illustrations of scenes no instrument can resolve, such as the interior of the Sun.
Music: original ambient sleep bed made for this channel (AI-generated), mixed low under the narration.
