"Legend says the Phoenix is reborn from its own ashes... but what rose that night bore no fury." I heard rain, and what sounded like the crackle of burning wood. I opened my eyes and found myself wrapped in flames. I raised my hands to the Heavens to pray to Zeus, to ask him to spare the village — and it was then that I saw the flash of light soaring above me. It was the Phoenix. Weary of seeing the earth stained with blood and ashes by human hands, she had chosen this village to descend upon and deliver justice. A man larger than any I had ever seen ran toward her — Hercules, sent by Zeus himself — but even his strength wasn't enough. Wounded, he cried out to the heavens. Then an arrow cut across the sky: Artemis, goddess of the hunt. The Phoenix fell, and burned to ash. That night, from among the ashes, a flame rose once more — and what emerged bore no fury. A bird of golden feathers, the guardian we know today. Perhaps she understood, that night, that wrath does not change men. Only time, and a little mercy, can do that. THE WRATH OF THE HEAVENS is an 8-minute programmatic work for full symphonic wind band, composed by Jorge Filipe Páscoa Oliveira and commissioned for the X Estágio de Orquestra de Sopros e Percussão de Vila Nova de Poiares.
