A younger player loops it hard, you give it a little push, and the ball sails long. Again. For most club players over sixty, the problem is not slow hands. It is that we were taught to hit every ball, and a block is not a stroke at all. It is a wall. Five fixes, each with a drill at a real club table and a check you can run on your own:
1. Stop hitting the block: the paddle waits in front, with no backswing and the elbow ahead of the body.
2. Lean the wall over the ball: why topspin makes your block jump long, how much to close the paddle for a heavy loop or a flat drive, and the rule "long, close; net, open".
3. Let your hand go soft: blocking at a three out of ten instead of an eight, so the paddle soaks up some of the speed.
4. Two walls, and you aim them: the backhand wall in front of your belly, the forehand wall without taking the paddle behind you, and pointing the block by setting the paddle face early.
5. The final key: stay close and meet the ball early — why stepping back from a hard hitter usually makes the job harder.
Plus a block for knees that won't bend low, a shoulder that complains and slower reactions, a word on fast rubbers and long pimples, and a two-minute exercise you can do tonight at home with a ball and a paddle (or a hardback book).

Educational content: no wins, rating or result are promised, and nothing here is medical advice. Warm up first, work in short sets within a comfortable range, and never lunge or jump for a ball. If anything hurts — shoulder, elbow, wrist, back or knees — or your balance worries you, stop, and check with your doctor or physiotherapist before changing how you play.
Next time you block a hard ball, watch where your mistake goes. Write one word in the comments: long, or net.
