In 1915 an engineer carried 70 pounds of Athabasca oil sand out of Fort McMurray on his back. In 1967 a plant on the same river finally turned that sand into crude oil. This is how Canada learned to pull oil out of sand: Karl Clark's hot water, Bitumount, Great Canadian Oil Sands on Tar Island and Syncrude, 1915–1978. 📌 What you’ll learn • Who knew the black sand first: the Cree, Dene and Métis of the Athabasca, and the sample a Cree guide, Wa-Pa-Su, carried to York Factory in 1719 • Why the drillers found gas and salt instead of a pool of oil, and why the first Athabasca sand was laid as pavement in Edmonton and Jasper • What Karl Clark's hot water actually does to a lump of oil sand, from a university basement in the 1920s to the Bitumount test after Leduc • How Great Canadian Oil Sands opened on Tar Island on September 30, 1967, less than ten months after Clark died, and why Shell's steam plan had to wait a generation Educational and historical content. Some scenes are illustrative reconstructions based on the historical record. This film includes the history of First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities, named as they name themselves. 📚 Key sources • Alberta Geological Survey, Earth Sciences Report 2000-05, Historical Overview of the Fort McMurray Area and Oil Sands Industry in Northeast Alberta (2000) • Donald J.
