It’s that time of year again. The Meguro Cannonball 2026 was held at “Nasu-Karasuyama,” the sacred ground of Meguro.
This year saw a total of 500 bikes—about 350 Meguros and about 150 other motorcycles—
making for a hugely successful event.
Last year, I was frustrated by an oil leak, so I finally got my chance for redemption.
Please take a look at the highlights.
Meguro, founded in 1924, is often considered the originator of purely Japanese-made large motorcycles, and the legendary Kawasaki W carries on that DNA.
It’s well known that these two share an inseparable bond.
After the war, Kawasaki Aircraft absorbed the financially struggling Meguro, marking the beginning of Kawasaki’s
history with large motorcycles.
I wasn’t old enough to get a license back then, but after seeing them in movies and in person, and hearing their exhaust notes, I, as a young boy at the time, was captivated by the W.
My father used it for his commute and would occasionally let me ride along, but for some reason, it wasn’t until much later that I learned it was a Meguro.
I’ve ridden Yamaha SRs and Kawasaki Zs over the years, but as my family grew and cars became more convenient,
I drifted away from motorcycles—though the desire to ride was always there.
Then one day, I spotted a Meguro K3 in a magazine.
I couldn’t sit still any longer, and since I’d reached an age where I wasn’t sure how much longer my physical strength would last,
I took the plunge and decided to ride it.
The nostalgic sound of “MEGURO.” Of course, it’s made by Kawasaki, but every time I ride it, it brings back memories of those days and gives me a fresh sense of joy.
“Tradition leads to the joy of riding.”
That’s exactly right. Thank you, Kawasaki, for bringing back the MEGURO.
Touring is fun, but above all, it’s just a joy to ride.
It’s a bit different from the W650—not just because of the fuel injection, of course—but that makes
it easier to ride. And with the upgrade to 800cc, the exhaust note is deeper and richer, producing the distinctive sound
of a vertical twin with a 360-degree crankshaft.
It’s definitely not a motorcycle that prioritizes speed, but I absolutely love its character—just as the famous Showa-era saying goes,
“Is this really okay?
