Europe's largest hillfort. 2,500 years of history. And on this day, just me, the wind, and the skylarks. Maiden Castle isn't just an archaeological site - it's a place where you can feel the past in the earth beneath your feet. On a sunny, blustery summer day, I walked its massive ramparts and stood where the Durotriges tribe once stood, looking out over the Dorset countryside.
Maiden Castle is an Iron Age hillfort 2.5 km (1.6 mi) south of Dorchester, in Dorset, England. It is the largest hillfort in Britain and by some definitions the largest in Europe, covering an area of 190,000 m² (about 50 football pitches). The site has a long history spanning 6,000 years - from Neolithic enclosures and Bronze Age field systems to the Iron Age hillfort and a later Roman temple.
Filmed on a sunny day with a strong breeze, creating wind shear across the exposed ramparts. The wind is part of the experience here - this is a hilltop that has always been at the mercy of the elements.
