What does God ask of the people He has already set free? In this video, we walk through Exodus chapter 20. Before giving a single command, God tells Israel that He is the Lord who brought them out of the house of slavery. Then He speaks the Ten Commandments: commands about worshiping Him alone, honoring His name, and keeping His Sabbath, followed by commands about honoring parents and treating neighbors rightly. The people tremble and stand at a distance, Moses tells them not to be afraid but to keep the fear of God so that they will not sin, and the Lord gives instructions for His altar. Exodus 20 shows us that the Lord who brought Israel out of slavery calls His people to worship Him alone and to treat their neighbors rightly, and that He is to be feared and worshiped on His terms. This chapter calls us to see obedience as the response of a rescued people, to let God's commands search our hearts, and to keep a reverent fear of the Lord.
