Louis Vierne - Final (Symphonie No. 6) - Ben Bloor

Final (Symphonie No. 6 in B minor) by Louis Vierne performed by Ben Bloor in the live final of the 2021 Canadian International Organ Competition on the 2014 Casavant Pierre-Biéque organ in the Maison Symphonique de Montréal on Friday 22nd October 2021. This piece is not only the last movement of Vierne’s Sixth Organ Symphony, but also the final piece in the composer’s symphonic output for the organ, acting as a climactic culmination of his vast contribution to the genre. Rather at odds with most of the rest of the symphony, which is quite dark and chromatically tortured, the Final is unashamedly joyful, with an almost tongue-in-cheek wit to it. A timpani-style bass line and a melody that wouldn’t be out of place at a funfair characterise the whole movement, and the overall effect boasts the best that the French organ symphonic tradition has to offer.
