Leon Avery - Don't Make Me Wait (1981)

Leon Avery’s “Don’t Make Me Wait” (1981) captures the tension of wanting someone who clearly feels the same way but keeps holding back. A late-night phone call that never comes turns into a drive across town, a curtain moving behind the window, and one final moment at the door where hesitation gives way to desire. Avery plays the situation with warmth and confidence rather than frustration, letting the flirtation build until the unforgettable pause in the second verse, when everything drops away and one quiet word — “Stay” — says more than an entire chorus could. The song’s relaxed sophistication recalls the smooth post-disco and boogie of Kashif, The Whispers, George Benson and D-Train, with a bass groove that carries almost as much personality as the vocal itself. “Don’t Make Me Wait” is sensual, playful and effortlessly cool — a song about the exact moment when patience starts turning into invitation. DON'T MAKE ME WAIT Oh... There you go again... Quarter after nine I'm sitting by the phone You said you'd call me back But I should've known I put another record on I let it play But every song keeps telling me What I came to say I don't need forever I don't need a guarantee But if you're thinking what I'm thinking Baby, come to me Don't make me wait Don't make me wait for your love If you want me Come and get me Don't make me wait too long Don't make me wait Don't make me wait for your love You know where I'll be Baby, don't make me wait Don't make me... Don't make me... I see your curtain move When I pull up outside You keep me at the door Just to play with my mind You say you're not the kind To give your heart away But every time you pull me close Your body says... Stay. I don't need forever I don't need a guarantee But if you're feeling what I'm feeling Baby, come to me Don't make me wait Don't make me wait for your love If you want me Come and get me Don't make me wait too long Don't make me wait Don't make me wait for your love You know where I'll be Baby, don't make me wait Maybe tomorrow You'll change your mind Maybe tomorrow We'll run out of time So why are we standing On opposite sides? Open the door, baby Let me inside Don't make me wait... (Don't make him wait) Don't make me wait... (Ooh...) All night... Not all night... Don't make me wait Don't make me wait for your love If you want me Come and get me Don't make me wait too long Don't make me wait Don't make me wait for your love You know where I'll be Baby, don't make me wait Don't make me... (Don't make him wait) Don't make me... No, no... Don't make me wait All night... Don't make him wait...
