THIS WEEK ON PATREON “Jimmie Rivers Lost Original”   / jimcampilongo   Thanks to pal Brian Dunleavy who has been sifting through a mountain of my personal cassettes that had accumulated over 25 years. Brian miraculously found a cassette labeled “Jimmie Rivers Lesson”. Back in 1994 both Johnny Dilks and I had discovered and obsessively studied the LP “Jimmie Rivers and the Cherokees Brisbane Bop”. This LP featured Vance Terry on pedal steel and Jimmie Rivers on guitar. Though the LP’s recording is lo-fi we marveled at Jimmies soulful jazz lines and flashy style that is still a part of my musical DNA. In ’93 or ’94, after discovering Jimmie was performing every Sunday a couple of hours away in Placerville, Johnny and I made a pilgrimage hear Jimmie at his weekly gig. Jimmie’s playing hadn’t skipped a beat and we went to hear Jimmie as often as we could. It was like going to see Abraham Lincoln give speeches - at the time I couldn’t believe it was possible to hear a person I felt I came to know through his solos. Anyway, musical friendships developed that led to a show at the Great American Music Hall where we backed Jimmie at a tribute concert one of the great thrills of my life. At one of our pre-gig rehearsals, the rehearsal turned into a lesson and fortunately I recorded it. Among many invaluable concepts Jimmie showed me at this lesson included a unrecorded Jimmie Rivers original song. For years I’ve wondered if that lesson cassette was lost, but after 26 years, thanks to Brian (and Jimmie Rivers of course) it’s here. This nameless tune (Jimmie Rivers Original) is reminiscent of Charlie Christian “Rose Room” but has the distilled laser focus of the Rivers style. He never played an unnecessary note. I’m so honored to get it out into the world, especially after all these years. I also have a snippet of Jimmie playing his original that will be included. Though I did my best to capture his phrasing for the lesson, this way we can hear the “master” play it. In the future I’ll be scouring through the Rivers lesson cassette and will be sharing ideas that Jimmie shared with me. I recall he was humbled by our love for his playing, but I know he wanted to share his knowledge. I’m proud and honored to be Jimmie’s “messenger” passing a small part of his musical legacy to you.
