You knew what you were getting into. The noise, the slow service, the cheap rent, the power that goes on and off, the begging, the basic food, and the poverty that comes with a low cost of living. I walk the boulevard in Dumaguete and talk through the little cuts that some YouTubers turn into a reason to leave the Philippines, then trash the country on the way out for clicks and views. This is my honest take on retiring in the Philippines after years of hearing the same complaints. Electricity goes out. Internet drops. Dogs bark. Roosters crow. Karaoke runs late in the entertainment district. Horns beep in traffic. Banks and restaurants move slow. Out of stock. Food is basic compared to Thailand or Vietnam. Rent at the cheap end comes with problems, and a higher rent, 30,000 pesos and up a month, buys a better place. None of that is a surprise if you did the homework before moving abroad. If you are thinking about moving to the Philippines, living abroad, or retiring on a pension, watch this before you let one negative video talk you out of it. A developing country has inconveniences. That is the trade for a lower cost of living and cheaper rent. Put a bandage on the small cuts. Do not pull the scabs. And do not become a mark by handing out money to every kid who asks.I also talk about why the people complaining the loudest are often YouTubers who spent years saying Dumaguete was the best place to live, then left and called it trash. Some of them come back. Some of them move on and keep selling the negative story. I have done both sides myself. It is on you to decide if the Philippines is the right place place for you.
What I cover:
Why a lower cost of living means more inconveniences
Noise, traffic, karaoke, and what you can actually do about it
Poverty, begging, and why that is not a reason to leave
Slow customer service, banks, and restaurants that are out of stock
Food, healthcare, and rent: you get what you pay for
Why some YouTubers leave and then sell the complaints
If you are planning a move, come and try it. Look at the blogs. Then decide for yourself.
