PROGRAMME NOTE
Published in 1727 as part of Rameau’s Nouvelles Suites de pièces de clavecin, the Suite in G, RCT 6, is a brilliant collection of Baroque character pieces originally written for harpsichord.
These five selections reveal Rameau’s remarkable imagination and theatrical flair. “L’Enharmonique” explores unusually expressive harmonies; “L’Égyptienne” brings the suite to a fiery conclusion; “Les Triolets” unfolds through graceful, flowing figuration; and “Les Sauvages” is driven by sharply etched rhythms. In “La Poule,” repeated notes vividly imitate the clucking of a hen while developing into music of dazzling energy and virtuosity.
Performed on the modern piano, Rameau’s music combines elegance, wit, rhythmic vitality and a richly coloured dramatic spirit.
