Ep 337 Peacewarts: Biomimic Defense 101 - Your Survival Is My Survival: Security Without Domination (Class 3) We explore how communities can construct security through shared-stake architecture rather than centralized force or weaponized deterrence. Drawing from Janzen mutualism between the bullhorn acacia and Pseudomyrmex ants, we examine three historical anchors: the governance of the Dutch Water Boards, the scientific interdependence of the Antarctic Treaty System (1959–Present), and the Megatons to Megawatts nuclear downblending agreement (1993–2013). Homework: Look up the history of the Antarctic Treaty System or the Dutch waterschappen, and summarize how shared physical infrastructure or binding international agreements created long-term security. Write down one question about any of this episode's topics. If you don't have a question, write 'no question.' Optional: Examine an institution, business, or community organization you belong to. Journal about what "structural rent" it pays to its members and how that strengthens or weakens collective participation. Books: If you would like to read more on this subject, some book suggestions are Cultures of Peace: The Hidden Side of History by Elise Boulding, Governing the Commons: The Evolution of Institutions for Collective Action by Elinor Ostrom, and The Antarctic Treaty: Extraterritorial Diplomacy and Governance by Christopher C. Joyner. Learning Topics: Janzen Mutualism; Bullhorn Acacia and Pseudomyrmex Ants; Shared-Stake Security; Antarctic Treaty System; Dutch Water Boards; Megatons to Megawatts.
