Easy watercolor setup for beginners...and for professionals who want to revive their love of art.

Want to know where to start with watercolor? Whether your a beginner feeling overwhelmed or a professional recovering from burnout? Start with the basics and don't worry too much about the rules. Our lives are incredibly complicated, so why let something as beautiful as art complicate things further? That's my advice, at least, for helping art be joyful and accessible and healing. Making art accessible comes in two phases. First, collecting the materials you need. Second, developing a process you love. Basic materials are paints (I like Winsor and Newton's travel or pocket sets), watercolor paper (generic is ok, but I prefer Fluid or Strathmore), brushes (I have Winsor and Newton, Da Vinci, and Princeton), and water (from the tap, baby! ... .. .. I have used ocean water, too. It worked.) The more streamlined, inexpensive, and lightweight your materials are, the easier it will be to sit down and use them. Less fuss, fewer decisions, less fear of 'wasting' paper. (A note on inexpensive products: they can be a little harder to work with, so adjust price point or expectations accordingly.) When you develop a process you love, you can find a million tiny ways to make it easy for yourself. Reduce the anxiety, the decision fatigue, the internalized performance pressure, and the distractions.
