In this nexMPI Training School lecture, Prof. Emine Ulku Saritas from Bilkent University, Turkey, introduces the fundamental principles of Magnetic Particle Spectroscopy (MPS) and its application to magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) characterization. The presentation explores the nonlinear magnetization response of MNPs, the operating principles of MPS systems, and signal acquisition and processing techniques. Particular attention is given to harmonic analysis, point spread function (PSF) estimation, and performance metrics used to evaluate MPI tracer sensitivity and spatial resolution. Through theoretical explanations, simulations, and experimental examples, the lecture examines the influence of nanoparticle size, magnetic relaxation, and particle mixtures on MPS signals, highlighting the importance of MPS for optimizing magnetic nanoparticle tracers for Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI).
