The Duke's Hounds Growled at the Bride His Mother Chose — They Lay Down at the Feet of the Maid

Ninette Laurent is a quiet French laundry maid at Newstead Abbey who spends her spare hours caring for the Duke's great hounds, and old Ranger, who trusts no one, follows her like a shadow. When Lionel Byrne, Duke of Newstead, comes home to meet the rich and lovely Miss Cordelia Blane, the bride his mother has chosen, the whole pack bares its teeth and growls at her. Then Ninette crosses the yard with a basket of linen, and every hound lies down at her feet. Lionel cannot stop wondering why. But Cordelia has a cruel secret, and when the Duke begins to seek out the laundry maid, she buys rat poison, poisons the hounds and puts the blame on Ninette, who is thrown out on the road with nothing while Ranger lies dying.
